The Social Network - 3 Stars
The movie was pretty good. It was really one of those early 2000s films and you could tell. Like the cinematography was great and the lighting on each scene was really bold and highly contrasted always. It added a lot to the scenes and more drama.
What I liked
I really loved getting into the backstory of Facebook, and learned a lot of who Mark Zuckerberg was seen as. In the movie you can tell, the guy is a douchebag. He writes terrible things about a girl he actually cared about, and that inspires him to create facemash about all the girls in his school. While this is exactly what leads to the idea of Facebook via the Winklevoss brothers, he did clearly "steal" the idea and make it his own. This happens a lot in the tech world, so I wasn't really shocked by it. But it goes to show the type of person Mark is, and reflects a lot on his character in the real world. Im sure some of it is exaggerated for the movie.
The movie really makes you appreciate what a genius he really was though. Its been like 4-5 years of using AI to code, and looking at this movie, watching him create all this from scratch and expand it is crazy. Even when he created facemash and the way he crashed the Harvard servers. This is stuff you only think about in real life. It really makes me think about the future of coding as a whole.
What I wasn't really into
I do wish it was more focused on the actual development of Facebook? Like the scenes I enjoyed most were when they talked about the money that went into it, meeting up with Sean Parker, finding advertisers in New York. Like the actual life story behind it. The deposition was interesting, but I felt that whole thing could've been its own thing later in the movie? He was sued very late into facebook becoming massive. They already had an office by the time the depositions happened. So watching that at the end would've been fine. I think i'm just not really a fan of movies that jump around a lot.
Also what exactly was in California? Was it the people? I feel like at Harvard he had more than enough smart people to help him build it out there. I wish the movie showed that more. Although you can assume because he came to cali, Sean was able to give him the VC money from that Bank, I forgot the name.
Overall just a good movie, probably a 1 time watch kinda movie though. I don't feel like I need to watch this again, which is what makes it a 3 for me.
